Walk with Boogie on a Sunday morning

Who is Boogie? 

A charming boy. Boogie isn’t mine — not really. He belongs to the whole street, the friendly bulldog who waddles from yard to yard, collecting pats and treats like a king making his rounds.

This morning, I spotted him waiting at the corner, stubby tail wagging as if he’d been expecting me all along. No leash, no fuss — just Boogie, ready to lead the way wherever his nose decided.

We wandered through the neighborhood, slow and steady. Boogie paused at Mrs. Lee’s garden to sniff her roses, then at old Mr. Williams’s fence, where the cat always watches him with lazy eyes. Sometimes he stops and stares at nothing at all, as if the air itself might tell him a story. Boogie is a lovely dog, unlike any other I’ve met. Sometimes I think he must be a philosopher. He simply enjoys each moment for what it is, without chasing reasons or meaning. How does he do that? Why can’t I?

At the park, he claimed a shady patch of grass and sprawled out like he owned it. He barely lifted his head when a pair of joggers passed by — Boogie doesn’t rush for anyone. A family stopped to scratch his ears, and he leaned into them, soft and solid, the way only boogie can be.

When he’d had enough sun, he nudged my leg — time to go. We walked back the same slow way, pausing every so often for a sniff or a rest. By the time we reached his front gate, he’d already forgotten me, his whole focus on a patch of grass that needed inspecting.

Boogie isn’t my dog. But for a little while, on a warm July morning, he was my walking buddy. And tomorrow, if he feels like it, maybe he’ll be there again — waiting at the corner, ready for another small adventure.
